Winter is coming! The days are shorter and we are in need to have a cosy dinner with friends warm inside. Enjoy the night with a lovely cheese fondue:

𝖨𝗇𝗀𝗋𝖾𝖽𝗂𝖾𝗇𝗍𝗌
700 gr round loaf (crusty bread)
225 gr Gouda cheese, shredded
225 gr Swiss Emmentaler cheese, shredded
2 tbs cornflour
One 35 cl bottle lager
2 tbs fresh lemon juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt
1 clove garlic, split
2 apples, cut into wedges
2 ripe pears, cut into wedges

𝖯𝗋𝖾𝗉𝖺𝗋𝖺𝗍𝗂𝗈𝗇
Preheat the oven to 175°C.

To make the bread bowl, slice off the top 1/4 of the bread with a serrated knife and set aside. Hollow out the loaf by cutting a circle around the inside of the bread. Pull the soft bread out with your hands, making sure to leave about a 2,5 cm border at the bottom of the bowl as well. Cube the bread you removed and set it aside for dipping.

Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet and place in the oven until it is heated through and golden on the inside, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, to make the fondue, combine the Gouda and Emmentaler cheeses with the cornstarch in a medium bowl. Toss with your fingers until the cheese strands are coated.

Combine the beer and 1 tbs of the lemon juice in a medium non-reactive saucepan over medium heat until it is steaming but not simmering, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the cheese in large handfuls, stirring with a wooden spoon. Continue cooking and stirring until all the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Once smooth, stir in the mustard and the remaining 1 tbs lemon juice. Season with salt.

Remove the bread bowl from the oven and let it cool slightly, about 5 minutes. Rub the inside all over with the cut sides of the garlic clove. Pour the hot fondue into the warm bread bowl. Serve with the apples, pears and the reserved bread cubes. Enjoy the cosy night with friends at home!

Did you know that when a cow eats onions, their milk isn't suitable anymore to make cheese? That's because onions belong to the family of vegetables called Amaryllidaceae. This means that these vegetables are only suitable for hum consumption.

You probably won't find a farm that feeds their cows with onions, but it's funny to know 😋

Cheese protects your teeth against cavities. It does so by stimulating the production of saliva. Saliva protects your teeth against cavities. Another reason to eat that extra cube of cheese 😉

Cheeseheads or Kaaskoppen is a way to refer to Dutch people. In the 19th century, Napoleon conquered a part of The Netherlands. Napoleon's days of glory weren't everlasting; the soldiers didn't receive their salary anymore. This made the soldiers pillage local cheese farmers to steal their valuable cheese 🧑‍🌾

However, the farmers didn't have weapons to defend themselves. By thinking creatively, the farmers turned their cheese barrels into helmets. With a bit of straw and a strap to vasten the barrel, they went on to defend themselves against the soldiers ⛑️

That's the reason why Dutch people have a nickname of being real cheese heads. On average Dutch people eat about 17 kilograms of cheese a year. But this doesn't crown the Dutch' to cheese-eating capital of the world. According to worldpopulationreview.com, France dominates the list with an average cheese consumption of 26kg a year. J'aime mon fromage 🇫🇷
